Anne Carson, who makes ancient Greek feel new, wins the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

The Swedish Academy awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson, 76, for a bold and inventive body of work that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.

What changed

  • Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson was named the 2026 Nobel laureate in literature on 8 October.

The award

The Swedish Academy announced on 8 October that the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature goes to Anne Carson "for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature". The prize is worth 12 million Swedish kronor, about $1.2 million.

Who she is

Carson, 76, was born in Toronto. A Canadian poet and writer, she is widely known for her translations of classical Greek literature, and her own books move freely between poetry, essay and translation.

Her work

Her best-known book is Autobiography of Red (1998), a novel in verse. In Norma Jeane Baker of Troy (2019), a performance piece, she blended the story of Helen of Troy with that of Marilyn Monroe.

The Academy said that the intersection between the philologist's obsession with words and the poet's desire for new meaning shapes nearly all of her work, and noted that she has herself identified the etymology of words as the starting point for everything she writes.

Where to start

For a first book, Autobiography of Red is the usual starting point: it retells an ancient Greek myth as a story about a young man growing up. Readers who enjoy it can move on to her translations and essays, where the same fascination with words and old stories runs through everything.

The ceremony

The Nobel Prize in Literature is presented in Stockholm on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, together with the science prizes.

Why it matters

  • The prize recognises writing that brings the classical tradition into conversation with contemporary forms.
  • A Nobel Prize usually brings a writer's books to many new readers, including in translation.

What remains uncertain

  • Translations of her work into Indian languages are limited; availability may change after the prize.
